The harmonic series on the first slide position starts on the tone Bb, usually considered the base note of the trombone. The notes are based on the harmonic series (or overtone series). In Germany almost all big orchestra's and all Opera houses make use of the contrabass trombone. Of course you still have to pull the right tricker! This can be a bit confusing at first but with some patience and work it is easy to learn.įirst of all, I think the contrabass trombone deserves his place in the trombone family, both in the symphony orchestra but also in the trombone ensemble repertoire. This made it easier for me to learn to pay with a good intonation. ![]() Second valve contra (Bb) = open bass trombone.First valve contra (D) = bass trombone with 2 valves.Open contrabass (F) = bass trombone with first valves.I have chosen for this combination because with these combinations the positions are not so different then on the bass trombone. These valves together make the contra go into Aflat. The first one in D ( so a minor third lower) and the second valve in Bflat ( a fifth lower). I make use of the contrabass trombone in F with 2 valves. As some of you perhaps know, I play the Thein bass- and contrabasstrombones, I have been in the lucky situation to help the Thein-brothers to develop there bass-line since the late eighties.
